Di Maria reveals how Madrid made him miss the Brazil 2014 final
- Updated: June 25, 2018
Angel Di Maria has hit out at Real Madrid in the process of revealing why he played no part for Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final against Germany in Brazil. He revealed that the Santiago Bernabeu outfit made a formal request to Argentina that he be rested for the clash against Germany as he was nursing an injury.
Although this looks like a case where the club are looking out for their player to ensure he is in the best of health and form, the Argentina international has insisted that the action was just a ploy to ensure that the player didn’t suffer any major damages as they were making plans to let go of him in the summer.
Di Maria added that he received the letter from Real Madrid and tore it before he even had a look at it.
“I remember getting the letter from Real Madrid and tearing it up before I even opened it,” Di Maria penned.
“It was the morning of the 2014 World Cup Final, at exactly 11 am, and I was sitting on the trainer’s table about to get an injection in my leg. I had torn my thigh muscle in the quarterfinals, but with painkillers, I could run without feeling anything. I told our trainers these exact words: If I break, then let me keep breaking. I don’t care. I just want to be able to play.”
Playing in the World Cup final can be described as a once in a lifetime experience even for the most elite of players and this revelation by Di Maria is no good for Madrid, as they have attained an image for being ruthless in their bid to replace players.
Di Maria added that he was applying ice on his leg when his doctor came into the room and handed him the letter, adding that it was received from his club Real Madrid. He responded by asking the doctor what he was talking about, only to be told that the club had insisted that he was in no condition to play any part in the game, and therefore he should be rested for the final.
Di Maria was subsequently rested for the game by manager Alejandro Sabella despite taking a number of pain-killing injections in the build-up to the game. He added that he then realized what was happening as there were rumors of an interest in James Rodriguez and that he would likely be sold to make way for the Colombian attacker. He added that Real Madrid didn’t want their product to get damaged, whilst noting that this was an aspect of football business that people aren’t aware of.
It can be recalled that there were speculations that Di Maria had missed the final of the World Cup in Brazil 2014 for Argentina due to an injury. However, the player appears to have quashed that school of thought with this latest revelation as there was more to his absence from the game.
